R. Spencer Garrard discusses his experiences attending Columbus College from 1966 to 1970 and teaching at CSU for 16 years. During Professor Garrard's time as a student, there were two colleges -- Columbus College day and Columbus College night. According to Professor Garrard, basically the people who came to night school were a separate group, already working, who came for business courses that were primarily at night. The day students all knew each other and would sit outside the student center which was located in the basement of the Woodruff Gym building. Professor Garrard discusses the affect of integration on the college and the subsequent mascot change. He also discusses the tremendous growth of the college, the addition of many buildings, extracurricular activities he was involved in, and the close relationship between students and faculty.

R. Spencer Garrard was born in Columbus on September 23, 1947. His parents were natives of Columbus. His family has been in Columbus for over 150 years. His aunt and uncle, Sally Garrard Davis and James Kyle Spencer, donated the Spencer House in Oxford, England to CSU. His father was in the construction business and his mother was a homemaker and volunteer. Professor Garrard went to St. Elmo School from Kindergarten through eighth grade.
